What are the advantages or disadvantages of a computers memory being split into two hard drives?

I think that's what it is... when I go to the computer section I see two hard drives, each with ~53 GB each. If I am right in thinking these are two seperate drives, is there any reason I shouldnt have it this way? All my other computers only have one main drive.

With a RAID controller (Redundent Array of Inexpensive Drives) you can do what is called stripping. This is a technique where two seperate drives act as on drive. Odd lines are on one drive while even lines are on the other.

By alternating between the two drives the access time is reduced increasing the overall performance. The disadvantage to this is that if either drive is lost/damaged the data on the other drive is lost as well even if that drive is un damaged.

Another Mode available with RAID is mirroring whereby one drive is duplicaing everthing that happens data wise to the other drive. This provides redundancy and immeadiate recovery should one drive fail.

If a RAID controller is not being used a single physical drive may be split into two or more logical drives.

One reason this is done is so the entire storage capacity of the drive may be accessed. Older computers had size limitations for example 60Gb, If you put a 120 GB drive in you would only be able to access 60GB of storage... The resolution to this problem is to partition the large 120GB drive into smaller logical drives of 60GB or less. Since each logical drive has its own Letter the OS can access upto 60 GB on each

How to change the setting of the router to connect more than 10 computers to the shared internet?

We have 15 computers in our public school. 10 of the computers are connected to a shared internet but the other 5 computers cannot connect to the internet. Our IP addresses are range from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.15. We are using 2 kinds of router that are connected to each other: SMC-AZ1016DT and D-Link DES-1016D. The students cannot use 5 of the computers for their RESEARCH in the internet because the that problem. Thanks in advance.....

How to change the setting of the router to connect more than 10 computers to the shared internet?panda

I am not sure the configuration you are using. If one router is supporting most stations and the other router supports some stations, there is probably a switch between the two routers. This is a wrong configuration. try removing the switch from the loop. try this ... Router 1 up link goes to the gateway(broadband device or host system), router 2 up link goes to port 1 on the first router. make sure the routers are off, restart the gateway. then restart router 1. wait till the pc's on that device can see the Internet, then power up router 2. If you still need the switch for port space, you can up link the switch into one of the open ports on the router. If you are already configured as above, then you have a MAC address problem. It looks like you routers are set pretty much to out of box defaults. You may need to reset router two to factory defaults by holding down the reset button for 30 seconds. make sure it is connected to router 1 and router 1 is on line before doing this.

Where is a good forum for learning about computers?

Well I am 14 years old and interested in learning a lot about stuff like connections, networks, software, computers, and stuff like that. Seeing as I don't know anyone who knows about stuff like that I figured my only chance was to learn it off the internet. Does anyone know of any forums or websites or some place where I can ask questions and computer geniuses can help me learn?

just look around. I would check wikipedia.
http://forums.programming-designs.com is a good one.
W3schools.com is great place to learn about programming in HTML, Javascript, etc for webpages. The '' for Dummies'' series is great too.

How do you increase your computers memory?

my computers vitual memory is low and idk how to increase it and i cant delte anything....what shiuld i do?

How do you increase your computers memory?norton 2008

You need to pop the cover off and add more memory chips. In some cases, the memory slots on your computer may be filled. In this event, you'll need to remove at least one memory chip and replace it with one that has more memory.

There are many different types of memory chips. To find out what type of memory your computer uses, go to the Web site of the manufacturer and search for your model. You should be able to find out what type of memory your computer takes.

As for ''virtual memory,'' that is actually space on your hard drive. The warning you're getting could mean that your hard drive is full and you need to move files off it. If your hard drive is not full, click on ''Help'' and search on ''virtual memory.'' It will give you the procedure for checking and increasing your virtual memory.

    Good luck!

How do you increase your computers memory?pop up blocker

First, check to see what your virtual memory is set at. It should be set at approx. 2046MB. To get there, right click on My Computer, select the Advanced tab, then in performance options select the Advanced tab again, at the bottom you should see the options for Virtual Memory. If it is set too low (Lower than 2046MB) then adjust accordingly. If this doesn't work, you might need to add more memory to your computer. Here is a good link for reference on memory upgrades. Check out this link. It will help you varify what memory you need to use. Then you can go from there.

You should add real memory to your computer. Look for information on doing that in your computers manual. The ''virtual memory'' is just you hard drive acting like memory because you are out of the real thing which is much faster. The increase the virtual memory right click on my computer, click properties, click the ''advanced'' tab and click on the settings button under performance, then click the change button under ''Virtual Memory''. Change the maximum size to meet your needs. I would set it at about 1500mb if you have a large hard drive (+80gb)

How do i let two computers access the Internet at the same time?

I just had ''hughes net'' installed and want to access the internet with 2 computers at the same time. what do i need to do

How do i let two computers access the Internet at the same time?norton antivirus 2007

You need to get a router. The hughes net line will go to the router. The computers will then connect to the router via ethernet cable and network cards. Or you could get a wireless router where you won't need the ethernet cables, but will need wireless antennas for the 2 computers.

How do i let two computers access the Internet at the same time?product key

You need to buy a router, to hook up to your incoming cable, or dsl, then you need a wireless card, for the other computer, to pick up the signal from the router..
You need to use a router, either wired or wireless. Wireless would give you added capability. See here:

    http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite...
You could use a 2 way splitter where the internet cable signal can be split into 2. Then you can connect 2 computers. Most Radio Shacks or electronic supply stores should carry this item. Costs about $5-7.
    1. install a router. Best is to take an older computer, with at least a 133Mhz processor, 32 Mb RAM, and at least a 1Gb drive, and a 2x CDrom drive. Three ethernet cards, and, FREE http://ipcop.org

How do you link two computers up to work together?

i have 1 modem and 2 complete computers how can i link them together so that two can be on the internet

How do you link two computers up to work together?norton antivirus

The best way is to get a NIC (Network card)card for both computers and a crossover cable.

And if you have win xp just start the new network wizard and follow screens.

    Done

How do you link two computers up to work together?security

The cheapest way is to use a CrossOver cable, look up the 'net for the pinout, all you do is put the cable in both ethernet ports and done!!

cons: it only work with 2 computers

The expensive way is to get a Network Hub

    cons: Price.

    Hope this helps
Make sure both computers have an RJ45 jack to plug in a network cable . . .

    Do either of the following:

    1) buy a crossover cable and plug the two computers directly into one another.

    2) buy a hub/switch and two standard network cables. run a network cable from each of the computers to the hub/switch

If you want them both to access the internet, the following applies:

If you chose option 1 above then one of the two computers will need another RJ45 port to plug into your modem and act as a proxy for the other computer.
