I know a network means that your computers will be connected, but can someone explain WHAT is conencted?? like just data (my documents, pictures), or even what the INTERNET HISTORY? can person from one -CONNECTED- computer see what the person are the other -CONNCTED- computer is doing on the internet?
In simple terms, it means that the computers can talk to each other. What you do with that depends on the software you use to utilize this connection. Your operating system (probably Windows) will allow you to share files from one computer on a network to another (if ''sharing'' is configured). If your computers are networked by means of a router, you can share your Internet connection over the network to the computers on your network.
Windows does not to my knowledge allow you to view the Internet History of another computer on your network. To do that you would have to install software on said computer to monitor its Internet usage.
Other uses for networks if for gaming. Because two computers are networked (communicating), a game (that supports networked play) running on both computers can join the two players in one game to play with or against each other.

If you're particularly technologically minded, then you might be able to invent some innovative hardware or write a program that changes the way people live their lives. Install a router and setup a network through windwos or Mac OS. On the computer with out a printer make sure it is set to print to the computer w/ a printer. One last thing the computer w/ the printer has to be on in order to print.
follow these steps:-
1.install the printer on one of the computer
2.after installing.right click on the printer icon and click on sharing.
3.now go to the other computer and access the other computer in which you have installed the printer.
4.when u access the other computer you will see the shared printer icon.

The router is wireless but I cannot seem to get them both to connect to the router and to each other at the same time. Also I cannot get them to share files Aparently I dont have access rights but I am the administrator on both and have set file sharing. Do I need to map each of the computers hard drives so I can access them?
If you are running Microsoft XP, make sure ur wireless cards are on on both laptops, make sure they both see the router(or connect to the router) by searching for your routers wireless signal (make sure u install the router properly).
If they both see the wireless signal form ur router then try to use both of them to brouse the internet (if they both work) then the next step would be to:

I think that's what it is... when I go to the computer section I see two hard drives, each with ~53 GB each. If I am right in thinking these are two seperate drives, is there any reason I shouldnt have it this way? All my other computers only have one main drive.
With a RAID controller (Redundent Array of Inexpensive Drives) you can do what is called stripping. This is a technique where two seperate drives act as on drive. Odd lines are on one drive while even lines are on the other.
By alternating between the two drives the access time is reduced increasing the overall performance. The disadvantage to this is that if either drive is lost/damaged the data on the other drive is lost as well even if that drive is un damaged.
Another Mode available with RAID is mirroring whereby one drive is duplicaing everthing that happens data wise to the other drive. This provides redundancy and immeadiate recovery should one drive fail.
If a RAID controller is not being used a single physical drive may be split into two or more logical drives.
One reason this is done is so the entire storage capacity of the drive may be accessed. Older computers had size limitations for example 60Gb, If you put a 120 GB drive in you would only be able to access 60GB of storage... The resolution to this problem is to partition the large 120GB drive into smaller logical drives of 60GB or less. Since each logical drive has its own Letter the OS can access upto 60 GB on each
We have 15 computers in our public school. 10 of the computers are connected to a shared internet but the other 5 computers cannot connect to the internet. Our IP addresses are range from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.15. We are using 2 kinds of router that are connected to each other: SMC-AZ1016DT and D-Link DES-1016D. I am not sure the configuration you are using. If one router is supporting most stations and the other router supports some stations, there is probably a switch between the two routers. This is a wrong configuration. try removing the switch from the loop. try this ... Router 1 up link goes to the gateway(broadband device or host system), router 2 up link goes to port 1 on the first router. make sure the routers are off, restart the gateway. then restart router 1. wait till the pc's on that device can see the Internet, then power up router 2. If you still need the switch for port space, you can up link the switch into one of the open ports on the router. If you are already configured as above, then you have a MAC address problem. It looks like you routers are set pretty much to out of box defaults. You may need to reset router two to factory defaults by holding down the reset button for 30 seconds. make sure it is connected to router 1 and router 1 is on line before doing this.

You need to pop the cover off and add more memory chips. In some cases, the memory slots on your computer may be filled. In this event, you'll need to remove at least one memory chip and replace it with one that has more memory.

First, check to see what your virtual memory is set at. It should be set at approx. 2046MB. To get there, right click on My Computer, select the Advanced tab, then in performance options select the Advanced tab again, at the bottom you should see the options for Virtual Memory. You should add real memory to your computer. Look for information on doing that in your computers manual. The ''virtual memory'' is just you hard drive acting like memory because you are out of the real thing which is much faster. The increase the virtual memory right click on my computer, click properties, click the ''advanced'' tab and click on the settings button under performance, then click the change button under ''Virtual Memory''. Change the maximum size to meet your needs. I would set it at about 1500mb if you have a large hard drive (+80gb)

You need to get a router. The hughes net line will go to the router. The computers will then connect to the router via ethernet cable and network cards. Or you could get a wireless router where you won't need the ethernet cables, but will need wireless antennas for the 2 computers.

you take depends on what you want to do. A good starting point would be A+ and an OS or 2. From there, you could study other OS's or Networking OS %26 hardware. A good goal would be 2 certifications a year (and the OS's are much easier to learn if you have a working copy!).
Get your MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) certificate. It only takes about a 8 months to a year. It is kind of expensive to get, so shop around and make sure you do your research to find a good school that has job placement for you after you get your certificate. I think the schooling costs about $8,000, but this probably varies from area to area. Beware of places that are scams, though, where they just go through the motions and focus on you getting certified FAST. You are the one who has to pass all the tests, so if they're just rushing through the information, it won't do you a whole lot of good.
Why are new computers with Windows Vista pre-installed on them so difficult to ''downgrade'' to Windows XP? I bought a Toshiba notebook which had Microsoft Vista on it, after seeing problems with recognizing printers and also noticing how slow the computer performed I decided to ''downgrade'' it to Windows XP but Toshiba told me that they do not intend to offer drivers for XP! I thought computers are made based on a Backward Compatible technology. Why are Toshiba and Microsoft trying to force me to use a product that I find problematic? I checked Sony and they also offer the exact same thing.
Actually, most hardware still has XP drivers still available for it. You just can't look on Toshiba, Sony, etc..., website for them. This has several reasons namely:
1. End-users aren't expected to modify their operating system; they are expected to simply pop in their restore disc when they have problems. It becomes too difficult to maintain support for two operating systems.
2. Most computers that will ever have XP on them are those that had it preinstalled. In about a month, there will be no more computers shipped with XP. Even Dell will have to stop selling them.
3. Vista incorporates new driver technologies that differ from any previous version of Windows. While Vista can still use some XP drivers, it is better to use the new standard, and it will become uneconomical to make two kinds of drivers.
I have 3 used computers: a Packard Bell from 1996, a Dell from 1999, and an HP from 2001, that I don't need anymore and I want to sell them. My parents first told me to sell them, but then they told me that even if you reformat the hard drive, someone can get your personal data from it, so they told me it's not safe to sell them. get the low level format utility that works with the manufacturer of the hard drive. it should erase everything. regular formatting with an os will leave traces of files. low level formatting can fix it. it removes any file system that was there. even after formatting like that you have to fdisk and format again with a file system.

The amount you figure out, IS you judge yourself, it depends of how much your hard drive stores, how much RAM memory you got, and how much is your processor's speed! BUT, it's safe to sell. You don't have to worry about the personal data, that's a lie. EVERYTHING will be deleted when you format. When installing windows, do a FULL FORMAT, and that's it.

We have three computers. The internet connections for all three of them go through a switch thing (all computers and the internet all connect to is). I used this to network two of the computers, but now I decided that I don't want them networked anymore. But I cannot find a way to delete the network connection, because it is going through the ''Local Area Connection'' which is also my internet connection.
your on a network, (the connector thingy) and thus the only way to ''delete'' it is to disconnect the other computers from the network...if you want to stop sharing files then just unshare your files....if you don't want to view the other pcs on your network just remove the ''my network places'' from the desktop and start menu and don't look at them anymore.
You could give them static ip addresses and give them different subnet mask.
when we read our email at the yahoo web site it is free of spam which goes properly into the bulk file. but when we download email from the yahoo server to microsoft outlook, our computers are flooded with spam; some have become inoperable because of it.

Your music will erase if you have itunes set to automatically sync the music. It won't if you do it manually (dragging songs from your library to the ipod)

Get a 4 port network hub. It'll have an uplink port that you would connect to the modem, and three other ports for computers. They are relatively cheap and can be purchased at any computer retail store like Walmart, BestBuy, etc.
it's cheaper to put another ethernet card in your one computer having modem and then do sharing by cable in another.
you just have to configure it by assigning ip address as 192.168.0.1 it takes default subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 and same192.168.0.1 in gateway and dns, in second, third you can put 1, 2, and 3 and if you have more than two computer you better try 4 port or 8 port hub/switch.
all you need is a router, you'll connect the modem output to the router WAN input port and the the two PCs to the routers LAN ports.
that's all you need to do. don't complicate things. a switch, or splitter will just cause errors when you try to log onto the internet.

If you're using Safari, you can go to the History menu and at the very bottom you'll find an item that says ''Clear History''; clicking it will (of course) clear the history. If you're using Firefox, go to the View menu, then Sidebar, and click on ''History''; the History sidebar will open, and you can remove items from the history list by selecting them and pressing the Delete (or Backspace) key. If you're using Opera...I dunno, because I haven't used Opera for a while. :P

I'm officially an ''executive assistant'' but it's such a mouthful that I stick with secretary.
In my job I do a lot of work besides the phone and editing letters, but it is all computer based - I run reports, prepare powerpoint slideshows (I take the slides my boss created and put in transitions, animations, backgrounds, etc), make travel arrangements, etc, etc.
I know that most of those tasks have a pre-computers version, but the thing is, with my job, when I finish all that there is to finish, I find myself on Y!A or reading the news online or doing some other surfing. I remember my dad's secretary - when I'd come in to work with him, she usually spent most of her time entertaining me! So I don't know what her job was really like.

Secretaries did pretty much the same tasks, but they were done manually. they used typewriters instead of work processors and printers. They made carbon copies instead of having a copier. They filed manually in folders and filing cabinets. They answered the phone, took dictation, ran errands, and entertained the boss's child when necessary. When they were finished with their tasks, they read a magazine. They made coffee and kept the books. Sometimes they shopped for gifts for the boss's wife. Sometimes they married their boss.

You can gain access to all 3 of your computers as long as they're in the same workgroup. To check and see if they are and to change them if need be right click on the My Computer icon and click on properties. Click on the Computer Name tab and see what the workgroup is named as. By default all computers will be set to workgroup as the workgroup name. If all 3 have this set as the workgroup name or if you would like to change it click on change and put in whatever name you want. You will need to reboot after changing this name but once you do you should be able to see all of your computers by opening up My Network Places and clicking on View Workgroup Computers on the left hand side.

you cant use a straight thru Cat 5 cable, you need what is called a CROSSOVER cable. It changes the pinouts from one end to the other. Or you must put a device between them like a hub or router to use a straight thru cable
The cable you are using to link the cards must be ''crossed'' or else you need a hub/router to connect the two. If the cable is crossed, run the ''network setup wizard'' thru windows XP.
When I moved from Ottawa to St. John's, I brought with me only my laptop computer. My larger desktop followed later. I bought, paid for and downloaded music from Bonfire (Puretracks) onto my laptop. When I transferred this music to my desktop, several of the songs would not play due to licence (DRM) considerations. Instructions from Bonfire re licence acquisition were complex, and didn't work half the time. I have no intention of sharing my music, but playing it on both my own computers is entirely within the terms of the downloading agreement. How can I rid my desktop of the DRM nuisance and enjoy my own legally downloaded and fully paid for songs?
One thing you could do is if you have a CD-ROM burner on your desktop computer, you could burn the licensed music onto a CD, and then copy (rip) the CD onto your laptop. If this is out of the question, the only remaining option is to try and relicense the music on your laptop.

Yup - It'll do fine. It handles both -B and -G wireless so your laptop can almost certainly connect wirelessly. The router can handle up to 4 wired connections, so your desktops are OK, too, even without buying wireless cards.
On the other hand, I agree with CompDan - While Linksys makes good equipment, I prefer NetGear...
yes it will. the laptop will utilise the wi-fi and you ethernet cable for the desktops. it can theoretically hold 50 wifi comps and 4 cable connected comps.
First make sure the laptop has G-type wireless which it should, and this router will work just fine for what you want to do. Although in the past I have had troubles with using linksys wireless and I actually just bought a new NetGear router which hasn't had a single issue!

Once of the desk tops can hook directly to your cable. The other will need a wireless card if you don't have an easy way to hook up the cable.

To share mouse, keyboard and monitor you need switch. It is not so expensive device; switches support from 3 to ... devices that can be attached to them. To share printer, you have to attach it to one of your computers and define it as local. For another one it must be installed as a network printer (surely, you need to connect them into LAN). Speakers... frankly, do not know!
KVM. I have the same thing and it works great. ^_^ I have a KVM 2 port switch, and all you have to do is hook in and have a blast. ^_^

probably would work but the problem is not that, the problem is the activation code. Activation code you have to get it from Microsoft. And then they are going to find out that you are using one serial number for all 3 computers and they wont accept taht.
yes and no. you mosy likely will be bale to install it and the computers will work buy when you boot up after a while (after you get caught) you will get messages telling you that you copy of windows is illegal so on and so forth. you will not be allowed to update. why not use linux? work as good if not better and it's free just download on any existing computer that is on line, download the free legal file burn it to disk and the boot from cd after you re format your computers. everything you had will work and linux does not get viruses.

i had to do the same thing. you need to buy a seperate cd key for each comp. you put load the disc into.contact microsoft and they can talk you through the whole thing.i think ist about $90.00 bucks a key.

Well, that stuff works a lot better if everyone is running XP. If they are running 98, they may have to do a little manual work. Also, if you have a security built into your router, you need to give that number to your friends so they can access your router.
It sounds like you may have to 'allow' them onto your system.
I don't know how you configured your modem and router, but if you have DSL and they use PPPoE and you don't have your modem or router doing the PPPoE handshake, then you will have to configure each computer to do the PPPoE handshake.

You will need a cable/dsl router. That will be hooked up to your modem. So it goes Line%26gt;Modem%26gt;router%26gt;PC. Once that is installed, you need to buy a wireless router (or get a realllllly long ethernet cable) and install it on the other computer. I'd suggest a wireless router, since ethernet cables are expensive. Plus I would always end up tripping myself over the cable. :P
you can use a DSL router to connect two or more compters to your DSL, there are instructions in the manual when you perchase one
A very simple solution. Purchase two Ethernet Cards and a cross over cable. Get the cards installed in the machines and it would be ready for work. Download a free-ware proxy server (www.analogx.com) and install it on the machine where u have DSL working. Both the machines would be able to have internet working.

I am sure ''Remote Control'' can do that. Remote Control allow you control your remote machine and run any application on the remote machine from local. I have tried to remote control one computer within LAN to see movie, it is quite good. But I am not sure how much it would be affected when you do that through internet.
There are lots of such so-called Remote Control applications as VNC, MS termial service (RDC, remote desktop connection)and PC-anywhere.
The most generally being used is VNC and MS termial service. But unfortunately, It only works within LAN or the machine with a public IP address.
But when you are away from home and going to remote control your machine at home to see cable TV(I throught it is in your home LAN, and don't have a dedicated IP) , you may need couple tips more than just Remote Control softwares to do that.

Definitely surf using an anonymous proxy. It is the easiest way to protect your privacy and to avoid being tracked by your ISP or search engines. The one I use is a few bucks a month and it works like a charm. The free ones you find online usually don't cut it. There are various technologies you could use to connect multiple computers to the same internet connection.
1. Your cable/ADSL modem
If you are having a cable/ADSL internet at home, you will probably be given a modem which gives you a wire/output (usually RJ45/ethernet). In the same modem, you will see plug points for more than one output. If thats the case, you can get a ethernet/RJ45cable (modem to PC) and just plug the wire in the modem and your other computer.
2. Hub or Switch or Wifi router
If you are just given a ethernet cable and you don't have a modem then you should get one of the above hub/switch/wifi router. The hub or switch does pretty much the same thing as your cable modem or ADSL modem. where as the WIFI router, lets you use internet over a wireless network. But this will also mean, your computer should have a WIFI card.

Windows XP has the Zip that can be lock using password.
There is no need for third party software that lock folder.
Secondly, you might want to try hide them using the hidden option in the properties of the file but you will need to use Folder Option to view hidden file.
There think there are 2 ways to do this.
1. Open windows explorer and find folder where the files sit. Right click on the folder name and then select ''Sharing and Security''. A dialog box will open. In the ''Local sharing and security'' make sure you check the ''Make this folder private'' check box.
In the ''Network sharing and security'' section make sure the ''share this folder on the network'' is unchecked, i.e. there is no tick make in the box.
This will stop people on your network from viewing the folder and it's contents. However if they log in as you, then they will be able to see the folder and access it's contents.

you need to implement MAC address filtering. Check your router's configuration page and look for filtering. Some routers you have to choose Allow or Deny. you want Allow. Then you enter the MAC addresses of the wireless adapters that are allowed on the network. You get this by typing IPCONFIG /ALL at a command prompt on each computer. Scroll down until you find your wifi adapter and look for ''physical address''. It will be 6 pairs of hexidecimal characters
Simple enough. You need to use a system called MAC address filtering. This basically takes a unique identification number from each computer's network card and can be used to set up access/deny rules.
Whether or not you can set this up using a typical Linksys router, I don't know, but I hope that you'll be able to do a bit of searching for the answer now you know what to look for.

In the security section there is the ability to limit connections by MAC address, this address is hard coded onto your network cards. when you do IPCONFIG, you are given the mac address of your network card. If you know the mac address of all the systems you want to use your router you can put these into you router and this will only allow you and anyone you want to use it.
I switch from Brighthouse Road Runner to AT%26T. I had no problem receiving mail on the 2 computers with Brighthouse Road Runner. AT%26T says they cannot download mail to both computers.

I have two computers that I'd like to be able to use my one monitor without buying any other peripherals. My HP w19b monitor has two inputs..DVI and the regular analog. One of my computers could be hooked up via regular analog connection and my better computer could be hooked up via DVI cable. Under my monitor menu I can switch between digital and analog inputs. I don't have an extra monitor cord available yet but if this will work I'll go out and buy an extra cable.

Nero 7.0 in my computers writes 4.5 GB matter in DVD in 35 minutes for some days and in 5 minutes on others. - no gear in between. For last three days it is working in 35 minute gear. How can I avoidf that?

Go to some place like http://www.speedtest.net/ and see what your speed to the locations of the servers you use is. Add the number of computers that will be using those servers and multiply. That (plus a little for email, web browsing, etc.) is the bandwidth you need. Since the internet (from your connection, through maybe a dozen or two routers, to the end point you're connected to) runs at a lot lower speed than your connection to your provider, you probably have more bandwidth than you can use now.

buy a router you can get a 4 port linksys for 40 bucks, and for 5 bucks more you can get one that is wireless also. make sure you don't get a switch though, switches take a bit of work while a router you can just plug in

If you go to www.crucial.com, you will see on the home page a guide to scan your computer which will tell you how many slots you have (each stick of RAM goes into its own slot), and how much RAM is in each slot already, and it will give you the exact type of RAM that is compatible with what you already have. On the one or two times I upgraded RAM, I have found their prices very competitive, and I've never had a problem with their RAM. I would expect their price to be quite a bit cheaper than the OEM of your computer, but it doesn't hurt to check.
Typically one would buy more RAM and install it. It's easy to install.

Wit Vista you need to have a user name on both machines so it authenticates. Meaning, jim on XP and Jim on Vista. So JIm can log in.

Make sure that file sharing is enabled on the Vista machine. It's a checkbox in one of the network related sections of control panel.
Right click on My Computer of the Vista machine, go to Properties, and check the computer name. Also in this tab, make sure both computers are on the same Workgroup.
On the XP machine, you should now be able to got to Network Connections on Control Panel %26gt; My Network Places %26gt; Add a network place %26gt; and browse for the name of your Sister's computer.
Once you have her computer added as a place you should be able to browse folders set at shared in their properties. If not something is being blocked by a firewall. So unplug your internet connection and turn off all firewalls on your computers and then set the network place. It should work normally after setting it up the first time.

Well, with XP, the following things are needed for your local network to ''see'' other computers
1. All have to be in the same Workgroup.
2. File and printer sharing has to be enabled on ALL machines.
3. Firewalls have to allow the local network! (this is usually skipped and not setup correctly.) Check the firewalls on all machines and the ROUTER.
If your LOCAL machine doesn't even show itself, recheck the file and printer sharing and be sure you shared a folder!
Also be sure the firewall allows the local network!

try to find a computer repair shop in your area..it would be hard to rpove to them that you can take on that job at your age but you will probably have your own space and work independantly on fixing computers, you might have to follow a few orders but on the most part, u will be responsible for accomplishing a big job in a short period...good luck!!

When you buy Vista you are only licensed to install it on one PC. Legally you are not allowed to install the same copy on another computer. Microsoft also only allows you to activate the same CD Key so many times, so if you do install it on all 3 computers then hope that you don't have to reformat and activate again.
I just bought a Quicktime Pro 7 for Win for $29. I just realized that it uses ''activation'' system. How many computer am I allowed to install on? Did anyone install this on more than two computers?
I think it should be able to. You can always try. (I advise only to install it on YOUR computers and not on other people's) If they don't allow you to activate, get a crack. You BOUGHT that program. You PAID to use it.
Am setting up around 11 computers for a very small computer cafe shop, a provider is giving an adsl modem, how do i connect all 11 comps with a router and switch??? am new at this usually i just use a router at home but a switch i have has 16-ports, maybe for lan gaming/ communication through all 11, as well as internet.

Using Without Router.
I think you have only 11 computers so you don't need any router only modem and switch will work good for you. First of all you check for your model is it LAN/Ethernet modem or not. If it is not an ethernet model then connect it and install it one any one computer. when that computer is well connected to internet. install proxy server on it. you can use winproxy or analogx proxy (free available from net). then setup your lan and do some configuration settings. Tools -%26gt; Internet Options -%26gt;Connection -%26gt; LAN Settings -%26gt; Click on use proxy server and enter IP address of internet machine and port number. Now restart and your internet is working on all conputers.
Another way, when you use Ethernet modem, connect adsl modem on switch and you have to configure your modem, suppose you have assign modem IP to 192.168.0.1. connect all computers to switch and assigning ip to 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.12. Now do some LAN Setting changes. double click on Locan area connection icon left side of computer clock. IP settings-%26gt; Properties. Default gateway -%26gt; ip of modem, 192.168.0.1 . Use DNS server -%26gt; ask for your ISP for DNS and Alternate DNS IP. save and close and reboot. your lan is ready for using internet. If you have further problem you can just contact to me. hello people i was just wondering what i will need to put two computers in my house on the internet using one broadband connection. i have already researched i need a router but is there i certain one i need i am just going to use wired internet but i have to run a cable out the window since my other pc is up stairs. i will need a router and some ethernet cables.

and how do i connect it all do i use the network wizard on windows xp? or will it be allright just plugging the cables into bothe computers?
If you just want internet on both PC's, Plug and Play buddy, you are all set to go, Don't pay any attention to the naysayers telling you to run wireless upstairs because that will just open you to attack from wardrivers. Obviously you are just a basic user, and as long as you don't pinch the cable you run upstairs, you're golden.
Running the cable indoors is preferred, but it will be fine outside for a long time, long time, before it gets beyond useable.....

You will probably only get on line with one unless you have a router. The computers each have their own IP address and only one will be recognized unless you have the router. Then, you have one wire from the wall to it and two wires from it to the computers. The wires are called cat5 cables, or network cables.

Routers are designed specifically and entirely to allow you to connect multiple machine to the same internet connection so yes, you can do this. Assuming it's actually a router you've got there and not just a model that you think is a router, your question implies you're a bit confused on that point.
if its a router, it should have ports to connect them both. If it is a modem, get a router or switch.
There are 3 ways you can go about this. The first and overall the most costly one is to call your ip provider and have them install a second modem. This usually cost about the same as the first connection so it cost a lot a month. The second way is to install a second nic (network interface card) into one of the computers and network them together. This way takes a lil more know how if how ip's work. The best solution is to go out and get a router or a hub. When you use either of these products they will usually mask your ip (mac it) so that it only shows up to your ip provider as 1# ip. If for some strange reason you want 2 ip's then you can also usually just pay for a second but its kinda pointless.
If there is more than one port in the back of the modem. If not, go buy a switch or router from any electronics store. Theyr'e not that expensive.

You would have to route this through your router. If your not using a router then you would need to describe what you have available. If your going to share a printer then you have to make it sharable through windows. A program that is only $30.00 makes it pretty easy. NetworkMagic.com is a good place to see the software. I am not sure what your running so if you could re-post with what equipment you have it may be a little easier.
You do not indicate if you have an Internet source, if you want all pcs to connect to an Internet source, or what you currently have.
I am going to assume you have an Internet source (either DSL or Cable Internet service) with an ethernet feed - and a dynamic IP address (not a static IP).
i tried with folderlock 5.7.5.. but although the files kept in ''locker'' are locked in that computer, other networking computers can easily open and view the files.. so i m confused... plz help..
Windows XP has the Zip that can be lock using password.
There is no need for third party software that lock folder.
Secondly, you might want to try hide them using the hidden option in the properties of the file but you will need to use Folder Option to view hidden file.
There think there are 2 ways to do this.
1. Open windows explorer and find folder where the files sit. Right click on the folder name and then select ''Sharing and Security''. A dialog box will open. In the ''Local sharing and security'' make sure you check the ''Make this folder private'' check box.
In the ''Network sharing and security'' section make sure the ''share this folder on the network'' is unchecked, i.e. there is no tick make in the box.
This will stop people on your network from viewing the folder and it's contents. However if they log in as you, then they will be able to see the folder and access it's contents.

Hook a network cable from your broadband modem into the download jack on the router.
Run a network cable from the router to each of the two computers
Go into the Control Panel and run the Network Wizard on both computers

MSN Messenger allows you to specify where the local archives are to be placed. Normally they're placed in a directory underneath your ''My Documents'' directory (with MSN Messenger 7.5, at least). You can customize that location in Tools, Options, and you may even be able to place them on another computer ... on the local network.

the device you need is a print server... (available from linksys, DLINK,netgear etc)
a print server is used for printing from more than 1 computer at the same time.
but make sure you have a router (to act as a DHCP server)...
also make sure the printer is not ''all-in-one'' as most print servers cant work with ''all-in-ones'' or with network printers...
