Can I connect my two computers using a crossover ethernet cable?

If I can, why did the network specialist who came to my house told me to get a router and 50 feet of ethernet cable?

What difference will it make? I just have to connec ttwo computers, both of them have ethernet ports.

If you are just wanting to connect the two, that's one thing - use the crossover cable. If you want them connected AND to share an internet connection, it's easier to go with the router.

of course u can connect them without any router or something like that u just need a standart cabel for internet i dont know whats the name of it but this is what i mean http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbvie...

connect it to the both computers and then create a local connection if u dont know how to do it this will help you: http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/FileS...

and then click on INTERNET PORTOCOL and click PROPERTIES then write DIFFRENT IP address for the both of the computers and the SAME SUBMASK for the both computers and u dont need a gataway and leave the DNS settings automatic if this dosent work then try to leave the ip settings automatic also!
