A ';supercomputer'; connected by different computers to solve problems?

Have you ever heard of a program, a server (or something like that), that connects computers around the world to solve problems, such as cancer? Maybe it's sort of something like the web bot?

There are several such computers. I don't know anything about them, but I have heard of them. One program was tried by SETI. Some companies do something similar with employee computers during ''down'' time. It's not a new idea, but it does take some serious programming to get going.
I have heard of many things such as buying computer's idle cpus even ps2 ps3 and xbox's as well. This was talk amunst my database class last semister so.
