I have a computer in my study downstairs that is connected to a Linksys cable gateway. The OS is Vista. The computer upstairs has a little cheap USB network adapter that I bought for about $14.00 and I'm running Windows XP on it. I can connect to the internet on both but I can't share files and folders between these two computers. I'm trying to set up a local area network in my home so that I can share files and eventually printers between these two computers. Is this impossible? Please help.
How do I set up a wireless home network between two desktop computers running different operating systems?internet
In addition to making sure both computers are in the same workgroup...
Both Vista and XP (as of SP2) have a built-in firewall, and it is on by default for both. This firewall blocks file sharing, so you need to either define exceptions for these inbound connections, or disable the firewall entirely.

Yes, it is possible. The easiest way is to do the following.
- Get a Network Attached Storage device. This will allow you to share storage between two devices. All you have to do is to connect the NAS to your router.
- You can also get a router that serves as a printer server. Such as the Apple AirPort Extreme. You can connect your USB printer to the router and install the Apple Airport drivers and you are up and running.
both computers need to be in the same workgroup. then you can set up file and printer sharing on both. lookup network connections or creating home network under windows help. this is very doable. we have 4 computers on our home network, all have internet access and can share files and printers. one is still running 98 and the other 3 have xp pro. When my son and his fiance come visit, they connect very easily with their Imacs to the internet from our setup.
