In the 60's were computers in the making but not on the scene?

Were computers almost completed but they were not out yet?

In the 60s you'd get your electric bill (or whatever) as a punch card. Across the top was was the admonishment: - DO NOT FOLD STAPLE OR MUTULATE -, with no other explanation given. Hollywood dramatized the computer as a wall of flashing lights. It was about 1970 that one could buy a ''computer'' from a 4 line classified ad in the back of Popular Science. I forgot the name of that computer, but I saw one in a classroom. The guy had it wired to a battery. Some miniature lamps lit up. He proudly showed us entering a binary number -- using onboard switches -- no one understood it at all. He announced the first number had been a 7. He would now enter a 4. And, another little switch on the short side of this circuit board executed two memory banks. He proudly told us the glowing lamps said everything was 11, as far as this computer was concerned.

The board cost $50 -- lot of money back then and no one could see why or who or what this little computer could be compared to the Sci-Fi computers that sucked people's identities into oblivion.
